New Operating System Month!
2009-10-17
This month I get to do my favorite thing, updating my computer's OS. Not once but twice, once to Ubuntu 9.10(Karmic Koala) and again to Windows 7(Vista 1.5).
My love for operating systems came about when I bought my first computer before going to college, which came pre-loaded with the brand new Microsoft operating system; Windows Millenium Edition. The rest of my friends who bought computers at the same time either got Windows 98, or waited 4 more months and got Windows XP. The Millenium version was basically the last GUI upgrade for DOS, but at the same time couldn't boot to DOS and couldn't run any DOS software. Now I have nothing against DOS, I loved that it kept people who shouldn't be using computers away from using computers. As far as Windows Millenium was concerened aside from not being able to run software Millenium had huge stability issues. I can't tell you how much hardware in my PC I replaced attempting to fix fatal issues with my computer, unaware it was the sure awfullness of the operating system bringing my computer to it's knees.
Now anyone who has complained about Vista obviously never had to deal with Windows Millenium. Unlike Vista, which is actually a decent operating system with decent upgades, Millenium was nothing more than an OS shoehorned in before XP to make a quick buck, with no real upgrade from 98. Because of some poor marketing, Vista went over about as well as Millenium Edition did and forced Microsoft to release a new operating system with little upgrades.
It's okay though, because there is nothing I like more than updating to a new OS.
